Practice Lab · for drummers

Generate a groove, then practise on top of it

Free tools that measure your time in milliseconds, right in the browser. No account, no download. When you are ready to play with music, open the Studio at your tempo and generate a backing track.

Tools

What each tool measures

  • Stick Lab grades rudiments note by note: timing, the right hand on the right note, and the fastest tempo you play cleanly. Start with the sticking trainer.
  • Timing Lab checks how even your 8ths, triplets and 16ths are in the timing test, and how well you hold tempo without help in the gap click.

A 15-minute session that uses all three

  1. Calibrate once (1 minute). Every tool starts by measuring your device's input delay, so a hit that sounds on the click scores as on the click. Redo it if you switch from a keyboard to a touch screen or plug in headphones.
  2. Single and double strokes (4 minutes). In the sticking trainer, start 20 BPM below your comfortable tempo. Raise it only when a round comes back clean, because the clean BPM it reports is the number worth tracking.
  3. Subdivisions (4 minutes). Run the timing test on 8ths, then triplets, then 16ths. Look at the early/late spread, not just the average: a wide spread with a perfect average still feels uneven to a band.
  4. Gap click (4 minutes). Let the click drop out for one bar, then two, then four. Holding tempo through silence is what playing with a real band, or a backing track, asks of you.
  5. Play along (2 minutes). Generate a backing track at the tempo you just played cleanly and groove on it. Every tool links to the Studio with that BPM filled in.

How to read your numbers

Offsets are shown in milliseconds: negative means early, positive means late. Small, consistent offsets matter less than a wide spread, so judge a round by how tight the hits cluster. Your clean tempo is the fastest round where accuracy stayed high; a higher tempo with sloppy hits is not progress. Every finished round is saved on this device under “Your recent sessions”, so you can see the trend over weeks without an account.
